Blogging for Blood Cancer Event

The first annual “Blogging for Blood Cancer” event will take place from August 11-18, 2008. This first time event will bring bloggers from across the United States together to raise awareness for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and its mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
The event is being hosted by Goodies for Mom in conjunction with the Friends of Heroes (FOH) National Light The Night Team . They are asking that bloggers post on your blogs throughout the event about the importance of the LLS mission, share your personal stories of those you have come to know who have been affected by blood cancer, or share some of the stories you read at Goodies for Mom and on the FOH site during the week that have touched your hearts.
All bloggers participating will have the opportunity to be entered to win prizes donated by event sponsors by leaving a Mr. Linky link on the Goodies for Mom post for the event. The event post will go up on August 11, 2008 at 8:00am. Even if you do not have a blog, visitors to the Goodies for Mom and Friends of Heroes blogs during the week will also have opportunities to win as they learn more about the importance of LLS’s research and patient services in the fight against blood cancer.
To help promote the event, anyone who puts a button or banner on their site, or writes a post about the event with a link back to this post, then leaves a link by midnight on August 10, 2008 will be entered for a chance to win a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card.

Happy Birthday Beatrix Potter

Potter at fifteen years with her dog, Spot

Born 28 July 1866
Kensington, London
Died 22 December 1943 (aged 77)
Near Sawrey
Occupation Children's author, illustrator
Genres Children's literature
Notable work(s) The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Helen Beatrix Potter (28 July 1866 – 22 December 1943) was an English author and illustrator, mycologist and conservationist, best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit.

Born into a privileged household, Potter was educated by governesses, and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District developed a love of landscape, flora and fauna, all which she closely observed and painted. As a young woman her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology. In her thirties Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and became secretly engaged to her publisher Norman Warne causing a breach with her parents, who disapproved of his social status. Warne died before the wedding could take place.

Potter eventually published 23 children's books, and having become financially independent of her parents, was able to buy a farm in the Lake District, which she extended with other purchases over time. In her forties she married a local solicitor, William Heelis. She became a sheep breeder and farmer while continuing to write and illustrate children's books. Potter died in 1943, and left almost all of her property to The National Trust in order to preserve the beauty of the Lake District as she had known it, protecting it from developers.

Potter's books continue to sell well throughout the world, in multiple languages. Her stories have been retold in various formats, including a ballet, films and in animation.

Miss Potter, a biographical film starring Renée Zellweger, was released on 29 December 2006. It was written by Richard Maltby, Jr. and directed by Chris Noonan. The character of Norman Warne was played by Ewan McGregor, while that of William Heelis was played by Lloyd Owen. Beatrix as a young girl was played by Lucy Boynton.

All hail the dancing queen

Out of the stamp and the scuttle came … Mieczyslaw Pianowski (in belted coat), Victor Dandre, Anna Pavlova, Lucien Wurmser and John Tait.

Valerie Lawson
July 19, 2008

In a grey fur coat, far too hot for an April day, the ballerina Anna Pavlova arrived at Central Station in Sydney.
It was April 16, 1926. She looked down, towards a child in the crowd - out of frame in this picture. At her sides were four hatted men: a Pole, a Russian, a Frenchman and an Australian.

The Australian, looking very pleased with himself, was John Tait, the force behind the star. Along with his brothers, all at JC Williamson Ltd, he promoted Pavlova's Australian tours in 1926 and 1929.

The Herald began its report: "Out of the stamp and scuttle, voices babbling and steam blowing, policemen pushing, porters running. Pavlova.

The Linkback Project

The Linkback Project

This is a simple procedure. You might have seen it done elsewhere on a few scarce weblogs. What is different, is that when we reach a certain point on the list, we start yet another one. Instead of one master list and its done, we will repeat the process over and over again, with new folks jumping on board. These backlinks combined with the social networking friends status will affect all areas of search engine algorithims. -=This List Will Stop At 100, then the next phase will start=-
To participate is simple:
—>Copy The Post & List below into a blog post of yours.—>Add Your Link to the list at the bottom.—>Comment On the original post at LBP so that I can update the list with your link.—>Make sure the list links and names are in place on your weblog post.—>Digg, Stumble, Tag, and Reddit all of us, spread the word, get more on board.—>Be sure to send them back to The Linkback Project for the updated list.

ZEN

Monday, 7 July 2008 0 responses

The Zen garden
A moment of stillness
Petrified in time
Ripples in the gravel
So devotionally raked
Halted in their disturbance
Caught in mid pace
Shades of grey
The middle path they say
Between black and white
Half the way to certainty

Worn smooth
By mountain torrents
Quite at ease
Though far from home
The centrepiece
A dome of stone
Frozen
Flexing its polished back
Like a cat
A glimpse perhaps
A crack in continuity
A portal for intuition
Sentient feeling
Knowledge and will
Always existed

Soon after
That first long
Wistful sigh
When space
Clotted into worlds
Before the gardener came
To rake and tend
Were stones the guardians
Of awareness
Perfectly at one
Silent and sure
Today tomorrow
And evermore
